A Chronicle Of My Cultural Revolution|
A Chronicle Of My Cultural Revolution|
A Chronicle of My Cultural Revolution begins with Xu Xing's personal experiences, recalling the misery he and other ordinary people endured during the Cultural Revolution. In 1972, sixteen-year-old Xu Xing wrote his first love letter, devoid of romantic clichés but filled with the doubts and interrogations of a young man deeply troubled by the harsh reality. The girl, confused and scared, entrusted the letter to her teacher. Yet the teacher, who was once a public security officer, identified Xu Xing as the author through handwriting analysis, leading to his arrest on charges of active counter-revolutionary crimes.
The film uses Xu Xing's first love story as a prelude, following in chronological order from 1966 to 1976 various small stories that occurred during the Cultural Revolution. The protagonists of these stories include intellectuals such as school principal Bian Zhongyun, writer and poet Liu Zili, orphaned brothers Xi Qingsheng and Xi Qingchuan who lost their mother in the violence, composer Ren Yi who was sent to the countryside as an educated youth, former Red Guards, and Wang Taihe, the kind-hearted elder brother of Xu Xing who rescued him when he was a homeless wanderer, etc. The film integrates personal memories with collective national memory, enabling them to mutually support each other, providing today's audiences with a historical narrative that is rich in both individual and public significance. The film could not be screened in mainland China but has been widely shown in universities abroad, including in the United States, Germany, Italy, and France.
Reflections and records on the 'Cultural Revolution,' whether in literary works, news reports, or documentaries, have predominantly focused on politicians and intellectuals, with very little attention given to the lower classes. Farmers, in particular, have been almost entirely neglected, even though this group may have suffered the most tragic and absurd experiences.
It took over three years in total to complete—one full year was spent on research, more than a year on filming, and another year on editing. In 2014, the documentary Summary of Crimes was finally released, with 14 elderly individuals recounting their experiences from those years in detail.
The Day of Reckoning|
This documentary film uses a love story between a husband and wife as a vehicle with which to confront the contortions of China’s political history since 1949. It is a personal love story, but it is also a story of a nation. Xu Xing wants to give a chance to the society to tell and keep their rather tragic story behind the official narrative of the Chinese state.
